Colombia Sixth Caravana Internacional de Juristas

27 Aug 18

At the invitation of Colombian lawyers and human right defenders, from 1 to 8 September 2018 the Caravana Internacional de Juristas a Colombia (Caravana) will be held for the sixth time. During this visit, an international delegation of approximately 20 lawyers from all over the world will travel through Colombia to, among others, meet local lawyers that have been or are being threatened in the free exercise of their profession. A delegation of Lawyers for Lawyers will participate in the mission.

Recent numbers show that the amount of (death) threats towards Colombian human right defenders and lawyers  have increased significantly over the last two years. It is of great importance that the Caravana hears and reports on the stories of these people, in order to get an accurate picture of the difficulties Colombian lawyers and human right defenders have to face in their daily professional and personal life. One of the goals of the Caravana’s fact-finding-mission is to increase international attention and aid in order to improve the working conditions and security of Colombian lawyers. That is why on behalf of the Dutch foundation Lawyers for Lawyers, Wout Albers and Ron Rosenhart will be part of the Caravana delegation too. They will fly out to Bogotá on 30 August and will meet with the other Caravana members on 1 September. Wout and Ron will report on their mission on a daily basis through the Lawyers for Lawyers blog.

Earlier this year, we asked Colombian lawyer Rommel Duran about the importance of the Caravana and the work of Lawyers for Lawyers in Colombia:

19 Sep 18 Day 10 and Day 11 (Sunday 9, and Monday 10 September 2018):  The Caravana was officially closed yesterday with an informal dinner with the 10 remaining Caravanistas. Afterwards, Gemma, Wout and me couldn’t resist honouring our cooperation with a few drinks at Quiebra Canto, home of the Colombian rumba. The evening didn’t really feel like […]

18 Sep 18 Day 9 (Saturday 8 September 2018): Tomorrow Queremos que anochecezca, pero que no amanezca. We want the night to fall, but not that the sun rises again tomorrow.   After celebrating life in style yesterday, today was supposed to be a calm day, during which we would evaluate last week en groupe and officially close […]

16 Sep 18 Day 8 (Friday 7 September 2018): Celebrating life After reading my blog posts of the last couple of days, I realise that my stories haven’t been very cheerful lately. Of course it’s part of the mission to be confronted with emotional and at times heartbreaking moments, but that doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been any […]

13 Sep 18 Day 7 (Thursday 6 September 2018):  Recovery Hay que recuperarme. I need to recover.  In my last blog I forgot to mention that our fact-finding mission in Cartagena was concluded yesterday with a short presentation at the University of Cartagena, where our amazing group coordinator Gemma summarised the observations Wout, Christian, Gemma and I made […]

08 Sep 18 Day 6 (Wednesday 5 September 2018): Carousel of emotions This is not a Caravana. It’s a carousel. Not to criticise the organization’s chosen name, but we are emotionally spinning around, and not moving in a straight, determined direction. Which is exactly the power of this mission.  A court functionary in Cartagena, specialised in land retribution […]
