Moham Lal Menghwar

L4L would like to ask your attention for the situation of Moham Lal Menghwar, a human rights lawyer from Pakistan. We have been informed that Moham Lal Menghwar was kidnapped when he was on his way to attend the Sindh High Court. His car was found abandoned with all his court files still in it. The abductors have claimed a ransom of Rs. 10 million.

Mr. Moham Lal Menghwar belongs to the Dalit caste of the Hindu minority community and defends many cases concerning this group. It cannot be ruled out that his disappearance is related to his work as a lawyer for the Hindu minority he belongs to.

The high police officials of the district Hyderabad, Sindh province all refuse to register the case, stating that it is beyond their jurisdiction. No police station is willing to take responsibility by registering and investigating the case. The police argue that the abductions of Hindus are not a new thing and the routine business of Muslim fundamentalist groups. In the meantime, Mr. Moham Lal Menghwar remains unprotected by the police of Hyderabad.

L4L calls upon the Government of Pakistan to open up a thorough investigation into both the disappearance of Mr. Moham Lal Menghwar and the apparent lack of adequate protection from the side of the authorities so far and taking appropriate measures to bring Mr. Moham Lal Menghwar to safety.
