Mazen Darwish and Saleh Shameya

L4L would like to ask for your support to the letter writing campaign organized for Mazen Darwish and Saleh Shameya, both from Syria.

First, the situation of Mr. Mazen Darwish, president of the Syrian Media and Freedom of Expression Centre (SCM), is a matter of great concern to Lawyers for Lawyers. According to our latest information, Mr. Mazen Darwish has been held in detention at the Air Force Intelligence headquarters in Damascus since his arrest on 16 February 2012. Recently we have been informed about his deteriorating health situation. He was reportedly subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment. Furthermore, four of the other staffmembers of the SCM, knowingly Abdelrahman Hamada, Hussein Ghareer, Mansour Al Omari and Hani Zetani, also remain detained incommunicado.

In addition, we would like to express our concern regarding the ongoing detention of Mr. Saleh Shameya, a lawyer and board member of the National Human Rights Organisation Syria, and an advocate of human rights in Syria. According to the information we received, Mr. Shameya was arrested on 17 March 2012 in Idleb in northwestern Syria, while observing a peaceful assembly in the city centre. His whereabouts have remained unknown until this day.

L4L calls on the Syrian authorities to respect and guarentee the physical and psychological integrity of both Mr. Darwish and Mr. Shameya, to disclose information concerning Mr. Saleh Shameya’s whereabouts, and to release both Mr. Darwish and Mr. Shameya immediately and unconditionally if their detention is related solely to their human rights activities.

Please support Mazen Darwish and Saleh Shameya by participating in the letter writing campaign organized on his behalf. Please download these example letters, adapt, print and sign them and send them via airmail to the addresses mentioned in the letters. If you have done so, please let us know via
